Sizing the Switch PoE Budget
A common mistake: adding port max powers and specifying that as the switch PoE budget. Real-world draw is lower, but you must account for simultaneous peak — e.g., 48 APs all rebooting after a power event. Reserve 15–20% headroom.
For a 48-port switch serving 48 Wi-Fi 6 APs at 25W each, you need at least 1200W PoE budget + headroom → specify 1440W minimum.
Which Switches Support What
Most modern enterprise switches (Cisco C9300, Aruba 6300M, Juniper EX4400) support 802.3bt Type 4. Older C2960X / ProCurve 2530 lines only do 802.3at. If your refresh cycle is 5+ years out, buy Type 4 now — Wi-Fi 7 APs will need it.
