Rack Planning 101: U-Space, Airflow, PDU, and Cable Management

Start With Inventory
Before buying a rack, tally every device and its U-height. Add 25–30% headroom. A typical SMB 42U rack fills to ~65% on day one.

Airflow: Front-to-Back Discipline
Every device in the rack must have front air intake and rear exhaust (or vice-versa, consistently). Mixing reversed gear creates hot-spot loops that thermal-throttle servers. Use blanking panels in every unused U — a single gap can cut cooling efficiency 15%.
PDU Selection
- Basic PDU — just outlets, cheapest, fine if you have external monitoring
- Metered PDU — total kW readout, good middle ground
- Switched PDU — remote outlet on/off, essential for unattended sites
- Monitored+Switched — per-outlet draw + remote control, for production DC
We default to APC Smart PDU AP8941 (Switched) or Vertiv Geist MNU2 for metered deployments.
Cable Management Rules
- Power cables on one side, data on the other
- Leave 1U cable manager between every 5–6U of active gear
- Use velcro, not zip ties (cables will be re-routed)
- Label both ends of every cable with source/destination + port number
